Lots of material girl: Madonna was keen to conceal rather than reveal her body as she attended the glamorous premiere of her film W.E. in New York last night
Madonna has been vocal in her admiration of Wallis Simpson - the subject of her new film., W.E.
And it seems that sartorially she may have borrowed quite heavily from the late American socialite's stylebook as she appeared on the red carpet last night in an outfit that had a strong vintage look.
Dressed in a dramatic sweeping velvet black and grey gown, with a shroud like ruffled wrap that covered her muscular arms - and veiny hands - she topped off the look with a retro style Marcel wave which softened the look.

The 53-year-old pop star who once took to the stage wearing barely any clothes, has now swung in the other direction, as she appeared covered up on the red carpet at the New York event.
While she certainly looked elegant, the Material Girl singer appeared to be intent on concealing rather than revealing.
Madonna greeted actor James D'Arcy, the lead actor in her film W.E., with a warm kiss and a hug at the Ziegfeld Theater in New York..

The English actor plays Edward Windsor in the movie that Madonna co-wrote and directed.
He was one of the star's of the film who came out to support the film which has received mixed reviews.
And the singer's 24-year-old boyfriend, dancer Brahim Zaibat slipped in separately from his superstar love with her daughter Lourdes as she took time to greet those who attended the glitzy event.

At one point, while posing for a group shot with some of her cast members, she playfully pulled Andrea Riseborough in for a kiss.
The 30-year-old English actress portrays Wallis Simpson in the movie that explores the American divorcee's relationship with the British royal.
Meanwhile James, 36, plays the Queen's uncle who gave up the throne to marry the woman he loved.

Madonna has said she is fascinated by the relationship between the two historical figures who scandalised British society in the mid-1930s, when news of their affair broke.
She co-wrote the film, which also stars Abbie Cornish as a modern day married New Yorker who is obsessed with Mrs Simpson.
Madonna won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for the track Masterpiece, which appears on the movie's soundtrack.

But she told MTV News on Monday night that she would love to get an Academy Award.
She said: 'Well, the Oscars, the nominations are coming out tomorrow, and fingers crossed, I hope my movie gets nominated for something.'

She then added: 'I would be really grateful if it did, but if it doesn't, I got the Super Bowl.'
Madonna will perform at half-time during the NFL game next month.
The mother-of-four has said she is very excited about singing during popular sporting event.

Other stars to turn up at the movie premiere included actors Ewan McGregor, Andrew McCarthy, David Harbour and Oscar Isaac. The latter two are in the movie.
The world of fashion also came out in force to support the Material Girl.
Designer Donna Karan walked the red carpet as did models Jessica White, Irina Shayk and former plus size star Crystal Renn.
Socialite Ivanka Trump and actress Julia Stiles were also there.
