Initial Impressions of Dancing With The Stars

Ok, I've done my research. I made The Boyfriend sit with me through Dancing With The Stars' premiere last week. For all of you that have not gotten hooked on the show yet - it's kind of like American Idol meets a figure skating pairs competition, only with dancing. There are three judges that evaluate about a dozen or so dancing pairs. The main judge is Len Goodman, a British, older man who as a well known Ballroom judge - must have a lot of experience with the technicalities of dance moves. Another judge is an attractive choreographer named Carrie Ann Inaba who is the Paula Abdul of DWTS with her kind, "glass half full" feedback. The third judge, Bruno Tonioli is more of a Simon Cowell personality with the accent of the quirky wedding coordinator Franc from the movie "Father of the Bride."

Some initial thoughts on this show:

I've never followed ballroom dancing before, but those are SOME costumes these people put on. I mean - there is definitely a unique fashion sense when it comes to dressing up for a competition. I think it's the equivalent to all those crazy leotards you see on gymnasts in competition or bikers who wear crazy spandex during a professional race. In any other context, they would look absolutely ridiculous - like they are at a Halloween party instead of a dance competition. The hair styles are outrageous. Many of the women look like they are dressing from the 80s. It's just kind of odd. But I guess it draws your attention, so that's probably the point.

I had no idea who Gilles Marini was until they showed the short segment on his role in the "Sex and the City" movie. The naked guy who was Samantha's hot neighbor. Now I will never forget him. He's gorgeous! And he was very talented. If he can get a fan base, this guy will go far.

Denise Richards bothers me. I'm not sure what it is. I just find her somewhat insincere and I don't like the fact that she is subjecting her daughters to a reality tv show.

I absolutely loved Shawn Johnson. I think she has a great attitude about this competition - and I laughed when the judges told her to watch her "gymnastics arm." She is so cute, and I hope she continues to do well.

Lawrence Taylor needed help. Holly from the Girls Next Door gave it a good run for not having much time to prepare but I think she's out of her league. I enjoyed the behind the scenes look at Julianne trying to teach her boyfriend and watching them argue. Must be tough to be that intense with the guy you're dating and have to boss him around. I don't think Julianne appreciated Bruno's comment after their performance when he said to her boyfriend, "She's quite a handful, isn't she?"

Belinda Carlyle did great. Steve-O was surprisingly good - and I hope Lacey can make him even better. I fast forwarded through just about everybody else until Melissa's performance. She definitely used that ballet leg thing about 6-7 times, but it worked for her. She's so graceful. I actually applauded for her in my living room. Sorry I couldn't vote live for you, Melissa.

I'm looking forward to tonight's 8 PM/7 PM Central show on ABC!!
