Lost in Lost

I was disappointed by last night's Lost episode. Why are they making Kate look so sweaty and in desperate need of a haircut? She's supposed to be the "hot" girl here - and they could play it up a little better.

We learned about Miles's background and his superpower. The whole childhood scene of his mother moving him in to a poor apartment complex unit and discovering that he has a real gift was a very Karate kid I flashback. Too bad Miles didn't have a Mr. Meyogi to guide him through his training. Miles's talent is being able to communicate with dead people. He can actually hear the thoughts of a dead person. It is for this talent that he is hired by Charles Whitmore to go to the island. They pay him $1.6 million and money is the only thing that can fill the void in him from wondering why his father left him and his mother as a baby and why he has this special talent of hearing from the dead. A week before he is to journey to the island, a random van of scary men kidnap him while he's about to eat a fish taco (I'd be pissed too), and offer him the chance to solve these mysteries and warn him about working for Mr. Whitmore. Miles refuses to go along with the kidnappers (shocker) and they throw him out of the van.

Back on the island, Miles is sent (along with Hurley) on all of these secret missions and has no idea why he is doing them. The audience learns that the Asian man who has been on all of the tapes about Dharma Initiative is Miles's father. There are some very funny interactions where Hurley tries to stimulate conversation between Miles and his father, but Miles's father is kind of a "douche bag" as Hurley calls him. Another funny scene is when Miles catches Hurley writing down the story to the Empire Strikes Back. Because it is 1977, Hurley figures that George Lucas will be looking for the sequel to Star Wars soon and thought he would "help him out." Which is exactly what Hurley would do since he doesn't have to worry about money anymore and really is just a Star Wars freak at heart. Just like The Boyfriend!

Anyhow, nothing really happens on this episode. Ben's father suspects Kate had something to do with the disappearance of Ben. One of the Dharma Initiative workers finds a security surveillance tape implicating Sawyer and Kate in Ben's disappearance. Sawyer knocks the guy out and is tying him up. Things are heating up. Jack seems to serve no role in this new life on the island since he can't play doctor anymore. There was no word on John Locke or grown up Ben this episode. One of the stranger scenes was at the end of the show - Miles looks in on his father holding a baby Miles in his house. It was one of those situations that begs the question - will adult Miles disappear if he is staring at baby Miles? Very Back to the Future-ish.

Til next week...
